My photography is influenced by over 25 years as a natural resource professional and a lifetime spent exploring the outdoors. Even as a boy growing up in southern Ohio I can remember many days exploring the nearby woods.
After working as a yearbook photographer in college my interest continued in photography through the 1980's and early 1990's until my first digital camera in 1998 awakened my passion for photography. In 2004, I moved to Traverse City, Michigan and became a member of the Traverse Area Camera Club. After several years of working with the group I attained level of Master Photographer. This gave me the confidence to start my nature photography company (Tom Haxby Photos).
My training has continued through the North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA), Nature Photographer's Network (NPN), the EPSON Print Academy and the NANPA National Summits in Albuquerque, NM in 2010 and Jacksonville, FL in 2013. I was also able to attend workshops with some of the biggest names in the industry including John Shaw, George Lepp and Mike Moats (macro photography).
Along the way I was fortunate to win numerous awards for my photography including semi- 2014, finalist NANPA Showcase Competition 2011, Tier III Winner 2012 & 2013, Winner Florida Trail Association photography contest, Winner Land Information Access Association (LIAA) Photo Contest, Best of Show Cadillac Art Fair (2011), Sustainable Forestry Initiative Contest Winner 2013 and First Runner Up in 2015, Honorable Mention Crooked Tree Art Center in 2016
The list of publications that have published my photos include the Cover of Michigan Blue Magazine (2), Michigan Blue Magazine Story Photo (2), Traverse Magazine (3), Cover of Traverse Community Directory (2), Great Lakes Calendars, Farley Calendars (2), Michigan 2012 Calendar, North Country Trail Association Calendar 2014, Greeting Cards (Leelanau Land Conservancy, North Country Trail Association), Whisper in the Woods, Barefoot Magazine, Manitou Magazine, Bay Life North, Lake Superior Magazine. I have shown my work at numerous art Shows including the Traverse City Art Fair, Elk Rapids Art Fair, Cadillac Art & Craft, Sutton's Bay, National Cherry Festival and the Frankfort Art Fair. I have also exhibited at the Traverse Area District Library, City Opera House in Traverse City and Art in the Loft, Alpena, MI.
